Cool government operative James Bond searches for a stolen invention that can turn the sun's heat into a destructive weapon. He soon crosses paths with the menacing Francisco Scaramanga, a hitman so skilled he has a seven-figure working fee. Bond then joins forces with the swimsuit-clad Mary Goodnight, and together they track Scaramanga to a Thai tropical isle hideout where the killer-for-hire lures the slick spy into a deadly maze for a final duel.

Ein af sorglegri Bond-myndunum, ekki að sagan sé beint sorgleg, heldur frekar sorglegt að myndin skuli hafa verið framleidd. Lítið sem ekkert sótt í bókina, sem er stórgóð. Bjánaleg karateatriði, afkáranlegur bátaeltingarleikur og hin gjörsamlega óþolandi Britt Ekland eru ekki til að bæta hálfbjánalega sögu. Þó er vondi kallinn, leikinn af hinum stórlega ofmetna Christopher Lee, býsna flottur og nær það jafnvel á köflum að sópa yfir algjört getuleysi Roger Moore í aðalhlutverkinu. En ber þó að fyrirgefa að einhverju leyti, því spennu og ævintýramyndir frá þessum tíma hafa einstakt lag á að eldast geysilega illa. Þess má líka geta að þetta var síðasta myndin sem Harry Salzman var getið sem framleiðanda, þó hann hafi ekkert komið nálægt framleiðslunni í raun.
