Líf hinnar ungu Karoline, sem vinnur í verksmiðju rétt eftir síðari heimsstyrjöld, tekur dramatíska stefnu þegar hún heyrir af dularfullri konu, Dagmar, sem er þekkt fyrir að aðstoða fátækar konur við að koma nýfæddum börnum í fóstur. Dagmar og Karoline tengjast sterkum böndum en heimur Karoline hrynur þegar hún kemst að hryllingnum sem býr að baki.
