Hroki og hleypidómar gerist í Englandi í upphafi 19. aldar og segir frá fimm ógiftum dætrum Bennet-hjónanna eftir að hinn ríki og ráðagóði herra Bingley og hinn stéttarmeðvitaði vinur hans, herra Darcy, flytja í nágrennið. Á meðan Bingley hrífst strax af elstu Bennet-dótturinni, Jane, á Darcy erfitt með að aðlagast mannlífinu á staðnum og lendir ítrekað í útistöðum við næstelstu Bennet-dótturina, Elizabeth.
